appy New Year and welcome to ACI-LA's January 2009 Newsletter. At the Mahasukha Center, December was a beautiful month of rich Dharma immersion, truly a Festival of Bliss. People who attended the festival enjoyed two weeks of surfing a sea of dharma teachings by Lama Marut, as well as special yoga classes, a vow ceremony and a maroke. January continues the Mahasukha tradition of offering an exceptional selection of dharma and yoga teachings. Please come and join in.

The Mahasukha Center has only been open 8 months, but in that time hundreds of people have benefited from teachings in authentic dharma and yoga traditions, which we provide on a donation basis.

In order to keep giving these gifts, we hosted the First Annual Great Bliss Benefit Dinner on December 3, 2008. More than 40 people attended the event in person and even more attended on-line! The evening's festivities included a welcome talk by Venerable Marut, live sitar music, and seemingly endless amounts of dinner and dessert. Our deepest gratitude goes out to all those who attended the event and donated items to the auctions. You expressed the true gift of giving!

We raised more than $20,000 over the course of the evening. This included the silent auction, coop auction, 3 year retreat, raffle tickets and monthly pledge forms. 15 people signed up for monthly pledges that will generate more than $10,000 this year. Generosity during the auctions raised $4,800 for operations and maintenance efforts as well as capital projects at the Mahasukha Center. Additionally, our community generated $5,255 to support the upcoming 3 Year Retreat!  

As you know, people who enjoy our center are getting a solid transmission of authentic dharma and yoga traditions for application in today's modern world. They're getting tools and resources to practice wisdom and compassion. As a community we work together to be happy and to serve others. This is the essence of our work. We can't thank you enough for supporting the Great Bliss Benefit as a way to strengthen and grow these efforts. We look forward to seeing you at next year's event.

LIVE VIDEO BROADCASTS of MAHASUKHA TEACHINGS and ACI Formal Study Course...including The Festival Of Bliss with Lama Marut.

As we fancy ourselves one of the more tech-savvy Sanghas (some might say 'geeky'), we have started trying to broadcast as many of the teachings, courses and Yoga classes that are held at The Mahasukha Center as we can. Those who are not in the area can tune in and watch the teachings live via the internet (instructions below), and most of the teachings will also be archived the same day for those of you who can be at neither the teaching nor the computer at the time the teaching is given. Here's a quick run-down of what has gone on so far and what we have coming up on 'Mahasukha TV'.

On the Festival of Bliss channel we have all the teachings from the most awesome "Festival of Bliss" that was broadcast and recorded in LA in December. In case you were under a rock at the beginning of December (or in retreat) you can go to the site (below) and watch/rewatch all the goodness that rained down on those lucky enough to be there (and the 500 or so viewers who caught the broadcast live!) Included are Lama Marut's four Dharma Essentials teachings on the 9th chapter of the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, which are next level emptiness teachings. Also a teaching on vowed morality, which demystifies a lot of the misconceptions about vows and why we would take them in a modern world. And two really interesting teachings on Yoga and Buddhism and how they connect. One of these was broadcast live from the Bodhi Tree Bookstore on Melrose ave LA. (Bigups to the 'Peace' clothing store next door who let us jack their wifi to broadcast... thankyou!). So you can check in to watch these amazing jewels of wisdom anytime, and you can push the "Follow" button (beside the main viewing screen) to receive updates as to when future classes will be broadcast.... or email me at darin@aci-la.org if you are technologically challenged and I can put you on the Digital Sangha emailing list. We even have the Festival of Bliss Yoga asana classes here: one by Anne Marie Kramer (an awesome all-level class); another by Jessica Kung and Stephane Dreyfus (teaching the fearsome Tibetan heart Yoga Series 7) - both with live demo's of the asanas. So if you are at home and you want to get busy on the mat, go to the channel (full intructions below), set your mat out on the floor and watch one of our super dope Yogi's demo the poses for you while you follow along, all in the convenience of your own home! The upside is that now it's really easy to do a yoga class with an amazing worldview/Tibetan Heart Yoga teacher, the down side is that now there are no excuses for not doing a yoga class with an amazing worldview/THY teacher.....so get lively yo!

Also Darcy Jones' Yoga Sutras Philosophy class is also available on-line. The 1st in the series is there (on the wrong channel, my mistake...sorry Darcy!), and parts 2 and 3 are available (in the right place) on the BuddhaYoga channel. (Full instructions below). This is the new Mahasukha Video channel dedicated to all things YOGA going on at the Mahasukha Center. For those of you who don't have Worldview/Tibetan Heart Yoga available to you, you can check in and push the "Follow" button for updates as to when the classes will be broadcast, both philosophy and asana, by Yoga Studies Institute accredited teachers and other great teachers who will be passing thru. There is also a great asana class taught by Darcy in conjunction with the philosophy classes, with Rick R demo'ing... (he's an awesome Yogi and will be teaching at the Mahasukha center in LA in '09). Yes, you can email on the email below to get on the list for future teachings on this and other channels.

We also have the entire ACI course 7: The Bodhisattva Vows (taught by the ACI-LA's own Lauren Benjamin) video'd and up there ready to go. All 10 classes taught in 4 or 5 three hour classes - she doesn't mess around. (See the link below).

Buddha Yoga Bliss

Like brilliant sparks trailing off the end of a blazing sparkler, when Lama Marut came to LA for the Festival of Bliss, just so the yogis followed. It felt like the karma we had created in our five months of offering three or four yoga classes a week at the Center was ripening to have so many beautiful yogis and yoginis in the space sharing their practice or teaching for us during the Festival.

Jessica Kung and Stephane Dreyfus offered a three-hour Series 7 class in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon which some were fortunate enough to take live, and others can still see online: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/festival-of-bliss

I find the experience of seeing these two lovely beings teaching together to be not just a yoga teaching, but a lesson in how to treat my partner as well. Both on this day, and during the Mahamudra Weekend workshop they taught for us at the Center in November, I loved the way each would respectfully and caringly turn to the other to ask for information, creating spaces for the other partner's brilliance to shine out. I loved the good humor with which Stephane let Jessica adjust him several inches deeper into a pose that looked fully expressed already, or when Jessica asked Stephane to give the example for Emptiness Flavor 3 while we and he were twisted around looking at the ceiling from under our armpits.

It seems like everyone wants to teach Series 7 these days, after the recent teachings in Mexico, where Geshe Michael and Lama Christie unveiled this newest Tibetan Heart Yoga Series. But that's fine with me - I can't get enough... until I reach Nirvana at the very least, because Series 7 aims for stopping the mental afflictions. The series is divided into 5 sections, each one associated with a wind that flows in the body, a color, a Buddha family, a mental affliction and an antidote for it. As the associated area of the body is activated with various yoga poses, the mental affliction often rises up, and then you get the chance to stretch, breathe, stomp, punch, dance and kick it out. I am serious about all of those - this series gives you plenty of tools, both physical and in terms of visualization, to balance the winds. After each time I have been led through it I have felt wrung out - as well as a little bit floaty and peaceful and sometimes weepy - and I definitely feel like I am made of potential rather than solid matter!

The next day we had a class from Anne Marie Kramer, whose studio in Sacramento, Zuda Yoga, trains teachers to integrate philosophy into their classes, and hosts Lama Marut's talks and Yoga Studies Institute courses. To a packed room full of dharma and yoga practitioners and teachers, she shared some of the basic techniques she has found for integrating spiritual teachings into a physical class at the times when the students are the most receptive and open. Then she let us feel what that is like, as she took us through a power flow class while mixing in elements of Tibetan Heart Yoga and ideas and quotes from Lama Marut's teachings. My Maroke

On December 13, 2008, the ACI-LA community helped me celebrate an amazing step in my path to enlightenment - finishing the 18 ACI courses and being maroked. From the perspective of having completed this step, I would say that the main reason I completed all the courses is deals I made with my Teachers.

The first deal started when I met Geshe Michael Roach and Lama Christie McNally at a Yoga Sutra (Pada 1) teaching they gave in Toronto, April 2005. I had received tantric initiations from another Lama but after four years of mystifying ceremonies and unexplained rituals, and what at the time seemed like negative reactions to my questions, I thought I'd had enough of Buddhism. A friend dragged me to Geshe Michael and Lama Christie's s teaching and I spent the whole 5 days asking tons of questions - rather rudely I'm afraid. No excuses, but I had been up the whole night reading the Diamond Cutter (which had sat, ignored on my book shelf for 2 years). At the end of the teaching Geshe Michael asked the students to promise to work towards enlightenment and, without much thought, I found myself agreeing.

My fundamental problem with the idea of reaching enlightenment was a sense of its unattainableness, and here I was pledging to reach for it. What was I thinking?! I spent the rest of that summer renovating a lake house with my husband at that time and arguing emptiness and the Buddhist path with sheets of drywall, drywall mud and stacks of wood. By the fall of 2005, I was convinced enough of the path to start the ACI courses on-line with Geshe Michael and Lama Christie and also Lama Marut. I completed 4 courses in three months and took Lay and Refuge vows.

Then I attended Geshe Michael and Lama Christieji's teaching of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) in New York and my whole world blew apart - thanks to the Dharma. I met Lama Marut for the first time, face to face, and was completely enthralled by his energy, wisdom and compassion. The HYP teachings took my understanding to a whole new level, and I decided to go to India for Geshe Michael and Lama Christie's February 2006 teaching, and to investigate the possibility of moving to Tucson to be closer to the Teachers and the teachings.

From this time until August 2008 I did not complete a single ACI course, though I started many and blah-blahed about them a lot. Others listened patiently, sympathized and gave me excellent suggestions on how to get things done. I didn't act on much of their advice. I thought about my resistance to doing the homework and quizzes; worried I couldn't understand the material and fretted that I simply didn't have the time. And so I didn't get anything done.

Then Lama Marut sat me down in September 2008 and said "December is the date you committed to me to get these done, the date you said you would maroke. I think it would very bad for your mind to not complete on that date so make it happen. I'll do what ever you need to help you." I squirmed. I trotted out the reason it just couldn't happen. I suggested another date. He responded by asking me for a schedule of how I was going to make it happen and an agreement to do so, and I emailed it to him the next day.

I made all kinds of arrangements with work and 'free' time but still didn't get them done.   All my external excuses were gone and with Lama Marut's directive I was staring the internal demons straight in the eye.

From that September meeting until the Thursday before my maroke it was a 'smack-down' with the demons every day. They whispered and yelled reasons in my ear (some really good ones!) whenever I sat down to study, listen or meditate. I lost to the demons a lot but won enough times to actually get the courses done, finishing more than one a week.

On December 11, 2008, I handed in the last written work, and on December 13 the maroke began. The ceremony itself was fun in some ways and scary in others. There were a few questions I was praying not to get and of course one of them came up first. But I felt these incredible waves of support coming from the audience and when I looked into anyone's eyes there was so much love and encouragement. It was a lovely evening I will cherish for many years to come.

And it feels great to have it completed! Thank you Lama Marut for everything you did to help me get this done. You probably know this already, but the demons still lurch around and you'll need to keep booting me towards enlightenment.

Implicit Dharma: Revolutionary Road

As the 2008 Oscar season moves into full swing, Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road has already begun to stand out. In the film, April (Kate Winslet) and Frank Wheeler (Leonardo DiCaprio) are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb. They seem the model of 1950's American success but their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job, and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities. In this film fueled by powerful performances, confident directorial choices and beautiful cinematography there is a great reminder for the astute Dharma student. Although the good looks and great potential of our two protagonists may tempt us to think otherwise, it remains true that happiness comes from serving others. Similarly, as Khen Rinpoche (the teacher of Geshe Michael Roach) has famously said, "A dog wags its tail in Tibet just as it does in New Jersey". If we take these two ideas together we see the message placed subtly in Revolutionary Road. There is nothing to do but serve others now, in the place that you are and happiness and satisfaction will follow.

Explicit Dharma: The Dalai Lama: Peace and Prosperity

With the New Year right around the corner, many of us will begin to think about the year ahead. Often, in these times, we think of how our next year might be more filled with peace and prosperity than the last. In 2007, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appeared to a sold-out crowd at Radio City Music Hall to discuss the ways that individuals can best cultivate virtuous qualities within themselves to bring about these very goals. In his address, His Holiness the Dalai Lama further expands upon his desire to promote religious harmony and tolerance among all the countries and peoples of the world. The film includes a question and answer session with candid responses from His Holiness on such topics as achieving inner peace in the chaotic environs of New York City, the difficulty of converting the practice of patience from a theoretical teaching to an everyday reality and the challenges of remaining hopeful in a violent world. Hopefully this film will help you to bring about whatever resolution you may have. No matter what resolution you may have, may you have a very happy New Year!!!
